Registration of the app failed with error 0x80073CFD

Apparently Windows updated (or not) but needed more attention...

Delphi had Access Violations, Visual Basic threw Out-of-bound-index errors and COM+ had frustrating locked DLL’s. Deploying windows mobile apps introduced a new type of message: “Deployment failed”. And often you have no idea why it is happening.

While creating a Windows 10 app in Virtual Box on my Mac, I got this one:

Registration of the app failed. Deployment Register operation with target volume C: on Package ***
(c:\users\loek\documents\visual studio 2015\Projects\App4\App4\bin\Debug\AppX\AppxManifest.xml) failed with error 0x80073CFD.

build error

Update Windows 10 to fix it

I deployed a few Windows 10 (universal application platform) apps before so I knew it should work. I remembered that Windows 10 rebooted earlier to perform an update. So I checked the update status and this is what I saw:

update windows 10

Apparently Windows updated (or not) but needed more attention! Let it update until you see:

restart windows 10

By the way, I love the ‘several times’ in the previous screen

Perform the Restart by pressing OK. A new (cool) screen appears:

updating windows 10

Wait until it finishes and after that you should be able to build and deploy your apps again!

relative panel universal app platform

This was not the first time I solved a deployment and/or registration-problem by updating Windows. I hope this helps you too!
